Haven 5K

The Haven's Annual 5K Run/Walk Against Domestic Violence was held on October 14, 2023. "Paint the Park Purple!" took over Walker Park for a few hours. BHS student volunteers were on hand to direct cars where to park, as well as, decorate the park with TONS of purple balloons, streamers, vinyl signs, and posters. Some of the posters and signs used were created by the BHS Art Club. Volunteers were available to help set up and take it back down again. BHS Cheerleaders and Band members were also at the park cheering and supporting the participants during the race and waving at participants at various stages of the race.

Blytheville High School strives to “provide an academically rigorous college preparatory program” for students. We believe that students with real-world, community-based experiences will be better prepared for selecting a college, college major, and career, and integrating theory and practice when problem-solving. By connecting their classroom education with Community Service Learning, students will learn more about themselves (e.g., interest areas, strengths, weaknesses, etc.) and hone leadership skills and soft skills such as teamwork, interpersonal skills, and time management. When students engage in Community Service Learning, their learning increases because community service activities connect their classroom content to real-world experiences.

Additionally, civic engagement can empower students and help them understand the vital role they play in community action and improvement. Through Community Service Learning, students will meet individuals at their volunteer experiences from whom they can learn to appreciate differences in thoughts, values, beliefs, and life experiences. They also can find similarities between themselves and the people they meet. It is Blytheville High School’s hope that students will therefore understand how those differences can add value to society and that people can work in tandem to solve a community problem.

Starting with the class of 2027 all students will be required to receive Community Service Learning credit for graduation. Ninth-grade students will need 15 hours from approved sites in the 2024 school year, and 20 each year following until graduation.

If you are a member of a civic group or organization and would like to partner with Blytheville High School volunteers on an event in the future please reach out to our Community Service Learning Coordinator, Candice Groves.
